  • Tain Thistle win Cordiner Cup for third year in a row

A goal in extra time was required to record a 2-1 win against Alness United in the Cordiner Cup Final this past Saturday, as Tain Thistle retained the trophy to make it three in a row.

An early sending off put Alness at a disadvantage after Kraig Vass was given his marching orders. But it took until just after the half time break for the deadlock to be broken, and it came via a penalty. The fouled striker, Mark Lamont, made no mistake with his spot kick to give Alness a 1-0 lead.

Gordy Mackay levelled the scores on 82 minutes, sending the game into extra time. It was all Tain from there, and with 12 minutes of the game left, the league's top scorer Darran Goller netted for Thistle to make it 2-1.

  • Jags through to Cordiner Cup Final

The Jags cantered into the Cordiner Cup final with a 7-0 win over Eastern Rose last night, in the rearranged semi final meeting between the teams at Tain.

Stellar goalkeeping from Ian Ross kept Thistle at bay for the first twenty minutes before Cammy Mackintosh rifled a shot in off the far post to give his side the lead. Gordy Mackay made it 2-0 soon after after a botched clearance, and Chippie Mailley shot from distance to make it three. The rest of the goals arrived late in the second half, from Daniel Christie and all three substitutes - Dave MacIver, Ali Mackintosh and Roy Smillie.

Thistle now play Alness United in the final on Saturday June 17th in Inver.

The Jags made hard work of a win over Fortrose Union in midweek, after twice enjoying a two goal lead before having to settle for a 3-2 win. Cammy Mackintosh gave Thistle the lead in the first half with a sweet strike and Darran Goller made it two with an hour gone. Daniel MacIver reduced the deficit with a goal for Fortrose before substitute Ally Mackintosh popped up to score his second of the season. A freak goal from Gregor Paterson gave Fortrose a late hope of taking something from the game, but Thistle closed the game out with ease.
