• Thistle dinner dance a success

A dinner dance held on Saturday last raised a substantial amount in what was Tain Thistle's second successful fundraiser in as many months.

Over fifty were in attendance as a wonderful three course meal prepared by the Saint Duthus Hotel was served before a raffle was held. Tickets had been sold in abundance throughout the early evening, before drawings were made and auction also took place for various items kindly donated by the following individuals and companies:

ANTA, Tain Pottery, Alan Nimmons, Martyn Farquhar, Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC, Glenmorangie Distillery, Red Chilli Indian Cuisine, Top Tain Curry Club, Morangie House Hotel, Time For Toys, Heidi Purvis, Tesco, Co-operative WS, The Royal Hotel, Dundee United FC, Carnegie Lodge Hotel, Scotsburn Garden Centre, R & B Garden Centre, Andrew Patterson, Michael Macdonald, club secretary Dale Finlayson, treasurer Niall Harkiss and of course the chairman Brian Macangus for the kind offering of a treasured club memento.

The club is hugely grateful to all who donated prizes, and of course to the Saint Duthus Hotel and Kirsty Macfarlane for their kind hospitality. Thank you also to those who bought tickets for the meal and the raffle, and to those who bid in the auction.

On hand as the evening progressed was vice-chair David Purvis who enticed a series of likely candidates into a game of "Roll a pound". This took the overall funds raised to just over the £1,000 mark for the evening.

The club wishes to thank every individual or business who donated prizes for the auction and the raffle, as well as those who bought tickets and participated throughout the evening festivities. The night was a huge success and has sent the club on the right road towards what we hope will be a successful season.

  • Thistle hit a hole in one

On Sunday March 3rd the club held its very first Texas Scramble fundraiser at Tain Golf club (www.tain-golfclub.co.uk).

The day went without too many hitches and was a resounding success. With approximately one hundred golfers taking part it took a fair bit of organisation and a big thank you must go to Magi Vass, Stuart Morrison and Thistle's Steven Martin for helping to make the day a success. We were fortunate enough to get a cracking day and the course was in immaculate condition, which allowed for some excellent scoring. The winning score was 53, an impressive 17 below par. Congratulations to Mathew Sharples from Muir of Ord, the winning captain.

There were a few notable instances on the day including Rob Farquhar, the father of Tain Thistle player Martyn, holing out from around 200 yards for an albatross on the 4th hole. This was however, outdone by the dress sense of Thistle pair Liam Rostock and Steven Martin (left).

All in all a good day was had by all who took part and both the football club and the golf club did well. Steven Martin was delighted to be able to hand over £940 to Thistle chairman Brian Macangus after the prize giving.

The prize winners were:

1st Place: Mathew Sharples (Muir of Ord), 53
2nd Place: Gary Ross (Tain Thistle) 54.7
3rd Place: Alan Sangster (Tain GC) 56

Closest to the pin: Ross Macangus.

The club are very grateful for the attendance of the event, with teams travelling from as far afield as Inverness and Helmsdale. A huge thank you must go out to all of the local businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes and helped out on the day.

Donations were received from:

Taylor Made Nails

Scotsburn Garden Centre

Munro Butchers

Bannerman’s seafood

Lidl (Tain)

Grants Bakery

Harry Gow’s

Salon 19

Mike Sangster

Willie Rostock

Stuart Morrison

The next event on Thistle’s fundraising calendar is the dinner / dance to be held on March 16th at the Saint Duthus hotel in Tain. There are still a limited number of tickets available priced at only £15 per head.
