• Thistle lose in Coronation Cup Final

Alness Athletic emerged as the better side in the Coronation Cup Final yesterday as 2013 winners Tain Thistle surrendered the trophy to the better side on the day, at Dingwall's Jubilee Park.

Despite looking the livelier of the two sides during the opening twenty minutes, Tain were unable to capitalise and soon after at the other end, Alness were first to force a save from open play, rattling the crossbar shortly after. Thistle's forward chances then took a bad turn when Darran Goller was forced to withdraw with an ankle injury.

The opener came from Gavin Legge as the centre half took advantage of a spill in the box to make it 1-0 to Alness, and not long after, the Jags were struck by misfortune as Brian Cameron turned the ball into his own net, giving Alness a somewhat flattering 2-0 lead at the interval.

If the scoreline had been flattering in the first half, the second half certainly ended any debate as Alness Athletic were in control throughout. John Allan made a number of saves to retain some hope for Thistle, but the writing was on the wall as Alness rarely faltered. To make it 3-0 with ten minutes remaining, Mark Lamont slotted home from the penalty spot after Niall McVicar had committed a foul inside the box.

Team:
Allan, Cameron, Davis, Duff, A Christie, Cowie (Gourlay), Farquhar, D Christie, Smith, Goller (McVicar), Rostock (Durrand)
